26 July 2010 : AS U WERE and "LIES X 3" Feedback from Fans and Blogs
What's happenin', L-Beezies?!
It's been exactly one week since we dropped the news that Lyrics Born's brand new forthcoming album, AS U WERE, will be available 10.26.10 on Mobile Home Recordings and Decon Records and showed you the album cover artwork.
The artist of the album cover is Kaseem Greene w/ art direction by none-other-than Brent Rollins.
One week ago was also when we gave y'all the free download of the new LB track, "Lies X 3"! The buzz has been growing and the feedback has been coming in all week long with people responding to the new ish.
Check out what some of y'all are saying on Facebook:
"great beat on the single, cant wait to get the new album. .:)"
"He's an artist doing his thing, hate it or love it, you gotta respect it... personally, I'm in the love category. Keep it comin LB."
"the new track is dope... Aint no one doing what you doing Bro."
"LB thank you for being soo freakin talented!!!"
"you did it again. you are hella consistent. love it."
"The heavy synth sound is brilliant. I'm ready for the rest of this album!!"
Thanks y'all for the positive feedback!!!
Fans ain't the only ones choppin' it up, blogs and music sites across the web were talkin' about the new record and single too:
RemixtheVideo.com "This song is funky and catchy as hell. Check it out."
SheenaBeaston.com "Lies X 3 pairs Lyrics Born's signature raspy singing style with a fresh new sound that's got me getting down all afternoon."
iMusic "'Lies X 3' sounds like a classic Junior Boys tune with hooky synth melodies, danceable beats, and soulful vocals, but there’s just one thing — it’s not a Junior Boys track. In fact, it’s the ever-unpredictable Tom Shimura, better known to hip-hop heads the world over as Lyrics Born."
Also make sure you check out this interview LB did with CMJ!
"This album is far more adventurous, and I continue to go into territory I haven't before. Frankly, I'm incredibly bored with rap and hip-hop, and in an era where everyone is so conservative, I really tried to go all out on the production and songwriting. At the end of the day, though, it's gotta be funky. It's definitely going to surprise a lot of people who think they know the 'Lyrics Born Sound,' but it won't surprise those who know me to be consistently unpredictable."

Bay Area Independent Rap Legend Lyrics Born has joined forces with New York multimedia powerhouse Decon for the sake of quality trans-national hip-hop. The multi-faceted musician plans to release his third proper solo effort, As U Were on October 26th. The lead single "Lies x 3" is an alt-tinged synth-rocker that is a sure shot summer banger.
Blending catchy pop-synth melodies and hooks, heavy guitar riffs, sticky bass, and windshield poppin’ beats, As U Were exemplifies LB's most adventurous production to date. Coupled with his razor-sharp humor, rhythmic baritone, and signature melodic cadence, the new album is a jaw-dropping musical experience unlike any other. Familiar fans will appreciate classic collaborations with Gift of Gab and Joyo Velarde, as well as an overdue reunion with Lateef. He also draws on the talent of recently celebrated acts such as Trackademicks, Sam Sparro and Francis and The Lights. Even beat impresarios Jake One and Headnodic snag co-production credits, hammering out beats alongside LB’s in-house team of stage musicians, the ever-funky and ambidextrous Lyrics Born Mixed Re-View.
In an emblematic and celebrated career spanning a decade, Lyrics Born has built his name, reputation, and expansive international fanbase by continually forging ahead into uncharted territory, both musically and otherwise. As a musician he has been responsible for some of the most memorable and innovative independent hits and albums of the past decade, both as a solo artist, as a member of Latyrx and as a founder of Quannum Projects, the seminal independent label he reared with DJ Shadow, Blackalicious and Lateef.
Noticing the industry shift towards digital content, the visionary entrepreneur developed one of the first artist-owned and operated internet television sites, LBTV, and the first artist-owned and operated internet radio site, LBFM. Years later, at the pinnacle of the music industry’s transformation, LB has maintained his position as one of the most successful independent Hip-Hop artists of all time. As U Were will further solidify this status. In a truly modern and unprecedented new partnership, Lyrics Born and his label Mobile Home Recordings will retain the rights to all content, including recorded masters. “I’m so excited about this right now,” LB gushes. ”I’m proud and flattered to be in league with such a long-standing and creative team that understands my vision.”
"I have been a fan of Lyrics Born since the days of Latyrx and we are thrilled to add him to our diverse roster here," Peter Bittenbender, president of Decon says. "Throughout his expansive career, he has consistently exceeded his fans’ expectations when it comes to creativity, sound, and presentation. We look forward to continue pushing those boundaries with what we hope will be the first of many collaborations"
1 July 2010 : Red Bull EmSee: The Road to 8 Mile
Recently LB was tapped to be one of the judges for Eminem's "Road to 8 Mile" Rap Battle contest which is currently traveling the country looking for the dopest MC.
July 16th this national traveling series will make its stop in the Bay Area where LB along with Aceyalone and Del tha Funkee Homosapien will be on the judging panel.
Admission to the event is free via Facebook RSVP.
The Official Press Release for the event is as follows:
Red Bull EmSee: The Road to 8 Mile is a freestyle rap battle of sight and sound, curated and directed by Eminem. The national battle series will make its second stop in San Francisco on Friday, July 16 and will feature top lyricists competing head-to-head for the honor of being named the illest freestyle MC on the West Coast.
This invitation-only competition has a unique format that challenges MCs to revive their true freestyle spirit. Building upon the traditional head-to-head battle by adding an innovative twist, MCs will be tested on the sickest flows they can create on the spot based on spontaneous cues--making it not only a battle against each other but also against the clock and the mind’s eye.
Each round will challenge MCs to be nimble, sharp and witty while dominating the stage. In round one, MCs will showcase their best flows over beats. In round two, their freestyle skills will be further challenged as they rap about themes that are texted to a screen by judges and the live audience. The third and final round is a head-to-head, a capella, take no prisoners battle-to-the-end.
Lyrical prowess during these rounds will advance the most skilled MC to the national finals in Detroit where the national champion will be determined by the one-and-only Eminem. The winning MC walks away with bragging rights and an opportunity to record with a headlining producer at Red Bull Studios.
“I’m looking for somebody to stand out, to be unique and to say the sickest, most ridiculous, most retarded s#%! you can say, something that makes somebody want to quit,” explained Eminem.
The three rounds will be judged by freestyle innovators Lyrics Born, Aceyalone (Project Blowed/Freestyle Fellowship) and Del the Funky Homosapien (Hieroglyphics), who will also give a special performance. The show will be co-hosted by MC Supernatural and D.R.E.S. Tha BEATnik. AmpLive (Zion I) will DJ and rock the beats for the participating MCs.
