First off, I want to say THANK YOU to all my L-Beezies out there who continue to ride wit me through every album release.
Y’all are what keeps this thing movin’ and without y’all I wouldn’t be here now.
That being said, as most of you already know I have a new album coming out early next year called “Real People”. As I always do before any new album release, I’m dropping a brand new mixtape later this month.
Brought to you by Mobile Home Recordings in collaboration with Room 389, The Lyrics Born Variety Show Season 6 will hit digital shelves October 28th, 2014 and be available physically only at the merch booth at my shows.
Each of these Variety Show mixtapes are very special to me as they reflect not only my collaborations with other artists over the past few years, but also a chance to record special exclusives that just don’t fit anywhere else.
Season 6 is no different as I’ve got some exclusive music on there w/ the Bay Area’s own, The Bangerz and an exclusive Latyrx track w/ none other than my Quannum brother Lateef the Truthspeaker! Other artists you’ll hear include Pretty Lights, The Gift of Gab, tUnEyArDs & many more!
As if that wasn’t enough, LBVS6 features remixes you won’t hear anywhere else by the homie DJ Icewater who meticulously mixed this, and most of my past mixtapes.
But what’s most special to me about this mixtape is that it features 3 brand new songs off of my forthcoming album, “Real People”!
It’s the first chance for y’all to hear what I’ve been working on since “As U Were” & Latyrx.
Boasting a whopping 26 tracks, this is the mixtape y’all have been waiting for:

Finally, after 16 years in the making, the highly-anticipated & long-awaited follow up to the 1997 West Coast masterpiece, ‘THE ALBUM’ has been unleashed!
“Bay Area alt-rap heroes return ahead of the long-delayed The Second Album“ – SPIN
“[The Second Album is] eclectic without getting wacky, thoughtful without getting preachy, full of great wordplay over beats that tie hip-hop to a history of all-purpose head-nod music from funk to electro and beyond.” – Rolling Stone
Today, pioneering hip-hop duo Latyrx, made up of rappers Lyrics Born andLateef the Truthspeaker, release their anticipated follow-up to their 1997 indie rap classic The Album, appropriately titled The Second Album. The album features appearances from members of Anticon, tUnE-yArDs, Living Colour, and The Decemberists as well as Busdriver, 1-O.A.K.and more. To celebrate the album’s release, they’re proud to share a music video that took nearly 100 hours to create that is compiled of tens of thousands of still images made to look like a stop motion video.
The music video for “Exclamation Point” artfully captures the essence of what a growing part of the population seems to be voicing: feeling overwhelmed and jaded in an overstimulated world while trying to navigate through the chaos to find inspiration and happiness. Juxtaposed against a driving, insistently simple drum line, comes melancholy sweet piano chords and a hook from singer Forrest Day reminding you to “slow it down” and to ignore things that get overused like an exclamation point. Created entirely with still photos shot with a Nikon D700, the video highlights the reality of how quickly life moves. “Much like in life, if you actually went frame by frame you’d notice much more; but as with life, everything just flies by,” explains director Mark Austin Heim. Shot in San Francisco and Oakland and featuring local landmarks and everyday people, the majority of the still images were captured at 4-6 frames per second at a rate of 10,000 stills a day for over a week. Explains Heim, ”After each day we’d compile all the images into a sequence that ran at 24 frames per second. Then we edited the video using the clips created from thousands of still images.” Syncing the sound portion proved to be especially challenging. Heim had Lyrics Born and Lateef rapping at 25% their normal speed to sync their lip movements to the track. “I love how organic yet jittery it feels,” says Lyrics Born.
Releasing another album after over a decade and a half of working on other projects feels fulfilling to Lyrics Born as an artist. “It feels fantastic. I was never totally happy with where we left off and we realized that even after 16 years no other duo had really built upon what we had developed conceptually or structurally, so from a listener’s perspective I think there’s a lot there to keep you interested and engaged,” says LB. “I really think people are going to love this album.” The Second Album is available for purchase on iTunes today.
Latyrx are currently on the first half of their The Second Album World Tour with rap duo Skins and Needles throughout the fall season, and will continue the second leg of the tour in 2014. The tour covers the west coast with stops in Sacramento, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and more.

Lateef and Lyrics Born are Latyrx, two Bay Area-based Solesides O.G.s who helped redefine hip-hop alongside DJ Shadow and Blackalicious in ’90s. But in all of this time, they’d only recorded a single album (1997’s The Album) together, instead spreading their skills liberally across other projects. Enter The Second Album, out November 5 featuring an incredible array of talent ranging from left-field rhymer Busdriver, to MPC kingpin Jel, to the Decemberists’ Chris Funk, to Living Colour singer Corey Glover (really).
You can hear the bewitchingly hypnotic “Watershed Moment,” which features not only an ace verse from Quannum compatriot Gift of Gab, but production (and additional vocals) from tUnE-yArDs. Stream that aptly titled track, check Latyrx’s tour schedule here, and see if you can’t add a few more dates to it via Kickstarter.
Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truthspeaker, the two halves of the groundbreaking, longstanding alternative hip hop duo Latyrx, are gearing up to release the latest single from their forthcoming album, The Second Album, on November 5th. The latest leak from that project is the pro-individuality anthem, “Close Your Eyes” featuring a verse by Busdriver and production from Antonionian.
Latyrx, who have long been known for their unconventional rhythmic delivery and ability to weave socio-political references amidst funky, boombastic production, have delivered yet another unique gem for the new single, “Close Your Eyes,” which premiered on Okayplayer. The anthem, which promotes self-identity, uses rich synths layers in the dreamy, auto-tuned chorus to contrast with the intense, dark tone of the verses. Lyrics Born says the song manages to be both hard-hitting and delicate at the same time. Says LB, “I felt like the lyrics could be rebellious and strong due to the drums and the somber sonics would make a stark contrast to that harder feeling – almost a context as to why it was necessary to be so fiercely steadfast in vocalizing your identity.” Adds Lateef, “Basically, the song’s message is how I’m no slave, I am not defined by others with no idea of who I am, and I am not controlled by outside media forces, nor audience/customer opinions. I am my own man.”
Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truth Speaker of Latyrx helped co-found the historic Solesides collective of the 90’s, which includes DJ Shadow and members of Blackalicious. When the two joined forces as Latyrx, they released their 1997 joint debut, titled The Album. It earned rave reviews for its adventurous production, eclectic style, and the rappers’ distinctive flows. The Album became a west coast indie rap classic and has been described as an unprecedented masterpiece. Shortly after, they released the Muzapper’s Mixes EP which featured the momentous single “Lady Don’t Tek No,“ credited as perhaps the only pro-female club banger in rap history. Over the past sixteen years, Lyrics Born and Lateef have been working on their respective solo careers writing books, touring the globe, releasing solo projects, appearing on countless artists’ albums, and even earning a Grammy Award nomination. Now a decade and a half past their first full-length, the pair are finally releasing the anticipated follow-up, The Second Album.
The long-awaited second full-length project will be released on their own Latyramid label on November 5th. The release features members of tUnE-yArDs, Anticon, Living Colour, The Decemberists, Blackalicious and more. Catch Latyrx on the first leg of their tour with rap duo Skins & Needles, beginning October 25th in Denver, Colorado and hitting stops in Salt Lake City, Sacramento, Portland, Seattle and more. The second half of the tour will continue in early 2014. Check out Latyrx’s Kickstarter campaign below to help support their tour.
