Back for another webisode of LBTV, Lyrics Born continues discussing 2010 and the highlights from the past 12 months including the release of Joyo Velarde’s debut album LOVE & UNDERSTANDING as well as the brand new Lyrics Born album AS U WERE — both available right now.

November 5th, 2010

The day of release for his new album, AS U WERE, Lyrics Born was re-visiting his old stomping grounds of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Before Berkeley LB kicked it here as a kid and has always shown much love when going back. 10.26.10 was no exception as you can read in this great review from SLUG Magazine online:

If you’re wondering, “Is Lyrics Born still fresh and vital in the hip hop scene as he used to be?”

Yes. He is.

Though he’s venturing even further into the realms of power funk, Lyrics Born—formerly Asia Born and best known now as LB—still remains important for conscious hip hop heads (yes, we still exist). He was as lively as the last time I caught him after 2005’s release of Same !@#$ Different Day during an L.A. Knitting Factory show. After the show I approached him, told him what a great time I had and he was very cordial back. The venue was literally shaking during the performance from excitement and the bass funk his band was pumping out.

The show was also the date of LB’s latest album release As U Were. LB said the show was an unofficial release party but he had the crowd dancing like it was an official, red carpet event.

What up, L-Beezies?!
Okayplayer just posted their review of AS U WERE yesterday and it was nothing short of spectacular. They gave the album 90/100!
Check out what writer Jeff Artist had to say about the album:

From the opening bars of “Kontrol Phreak” it’s apparent that LB hasn’t abandoned the eclecticism that’s come to define his style. This here’s an electro party, and we’re compelled by an album that harkens back sonically to the glory days of early 80’s synth-soul. Whether you hear Bambaataa in “We Live By The Beat,” Off The Wall era Quincy Jones in “Coulda Woulda Shoulda,” or Kraftwerk in “Pushed Aside/Pulled Apart,” LB’s decision to toe the line of retro provolone pays off big. Perhaps the payoff is nowhere bigger than on lead single “Lies X 3,” a spirited heart-break jam guaranteed to squeeze the hipster out of even the hardest of rocks.

All totaled, As U Were is far from (just) a rap album, but it seems we should be thankful for that because by avoiding strict coherence it manages to celebrate so much of the music that has molded the form. Far-reaching flows over throwback electro soul, or street-wise synth-pop for the 20-10… whatever labels you need to apply to it – at day’s end, it’s just good fucking music.

The commentary on this album so far has been outstanding with music critics, other artists and fans loving LB’s new music.

FILTER Magazine:

‘UC-Berkeley graduate Tom Shimura, who has been making sophisticated hip-hop as Lyrics Born for well over a decade, is one of those rare talents that has the ability to turn just about everything he touches into pure audible gold. He’s never really made or been part of a substandard record and the Bay Area MC’s newest album, As U Were, is no exception.’

SF Examiner:

‘With a career spanning over a decade, Lyrics Born is truly an indie music champion. He has continually turned out hits whether he’s riding solo, as a member of Latryx with fellow emcee Lateef, or as the co founder of Quannum records; the label he created with DJ Shadow, Gift of Gab and Lateef.’

If that wasn’t enough LB has gettin’ lots of love from y’all on the new singles “Lies X 3” and “Pushed Aside/Pulled Apart”, as well as the leak, “Something Better” feat. Francis and The Lights:
